ALICE HARDER

March 4, 1937 ~ July 2, 2016

On July 2, 2016 with her family by her side, Alice Marie Renee Harder (nee Garand) lost her battle to breast cancer at the age of 79 years old.

Alice was predeceased by her husband Norman Harder; father Jean-Baptiste Garand; mother Antoinette Young (Nee Garand); sister Pauline Martin; brothers Paul Garand, Leonard Garand and Germaine Garand; brother-in-laws Tom Sawatsky, Jauques Mignault, nephew Claude Vien; and great-niece Savanna Garand. She is survived by her sisters, Lucille Vien (Emile), Yvonne Sherring (Ed), Annette Sawatsky and Jeanne Mignault as well as her brother Robert Garand (Melinda) and sister in law Anna Garand.

Alice was born on March 4, 1937 in St. Pierre MB. Alice was married with Norman in October 29, 1955 at the St. Boniface Cathedral. Alice had 6 children Rick (Julie), Grace (Dave), Perry, Pearl (Guy), Darryl (Sylvia), and Shelley (Brock). Also Grand children Lana, Dustin (Michelle) Blaine (Derek), Lennon (Amber), Kristian (Adam), Ivory, Richard, Blake (Stephanie) and Chantel; great-grandchildren  Slater, Austin, Skylar, Emma, Meadow, Broden, Lucas and Hadley and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Alice had a very strong relationship with her cousin Yvonne Ewanchuk and friend Sylvia Guiboche, Sharon Grenier (Danny) and Hope Storoszczuk.

Alice worked at Old Dutch Foods/the Bell Hotel/Leland Hotel and the Balmoral Hotel, she also returned to Carpentry school for awhile but had to stop to care her husband after his heart attack. Alice enjoyed fishing both in the summer and the winter. She enjoyed going to Nutamik Lake with friends and family. In 1992 Alice bought some land in St. Laurent, MB where she lived until her death. She put her special touch out there by putting together one of the most beautiful wild gardens that she planted each and every flower by hand. After her husband’s death, Alice got a hummingbird tattoo.  She also got her license at the age of 65. Alice was diagnosed with stage 4 Breast cancer in August 2014 and fought a hard battle to prolong her life for her children.

It was time for Alice to go and join her loved ones waiting for her in heaven. She’s planting wild flower gardens up in heaven now and digging in the dirt (which is what she loved). She’s playing bingo and card games and she’s singing with Norm.

Alice’s wish was to be cremated and have her ashes scattered among her wild flower gardens at her home in St. Laurent, MB.  Her wishes were that there be no funeral service however family will be gathering to celebrate her life at a later date.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Cara Chandlier and staff at Mount Carmel Clinic and Dr Kowaluk, Dr. Niurala and all staff at the St. Boniface Cancer Care. Also a huge thanks to the Tenants from Sprucewood Lodge in Balmoral MB where my mom lived in the winter months. The family would like to send a special thank you to her nieces Cookie and Claudette for their special care for our mom at the lake.
