Laurel Garvie

January 1, 1942 - July 4, 2019

MILLICENT LAUREL GARVIE

Laurel Garvie, born January 1, 1942, died peacefully on July 4, 2019 surrounded by family and friends.

Laurel loved and was loved by Keith her husband of 56 years, their adored children Mike (Dawn), and Nikki (Bryden), and cherished granddaughters Allison, Janelle, and Kristen.  She is also survived by her brother Ken (Kris), sister-in-law Helen (Don), nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  She was pre-deceased by her parents and her brother Bill and sister-in-law Marilyn.

For both Laurel and Keith, their children and grandchildren have been the joy and centre of their lives.

Laurel’s life was full - encompassing this great love of family, close friends, a satisfying career and volunteer work that enriched both her and her community.

Laurel was articulate, direct and honest - a person of integrity. She was quick to mentor and offer her ideas or suggestions.  She was a planner, an organizer and a natural leader who enjoyed helping and watching others succeed. She expressed gratitude and gave positive feedback generously.  She knew how to tell a story in full colour.  An extrovert, Laurel drew energy from being with the people she loved.  She was a loyal and protective friend.

Laurel had great taste and an eye for quality.  She enjoyed travel, home décor, music of many genres and trying different cuisines.  Laurel was skilled at sewing and got enormous pleasure and satisfaction from turning that talent into projects that raised money for great causes – such as Grands ‘n’ More Winnipeg – which supports grandmothers and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Completing a Master’s degree in Adult Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education was a mid-life gift to herself.  Laurel entered full time work with not-for-profit human service agencies, primarily focused on women’s health. She worked for six years as Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Manitoba, where fostering healthy relationships with colleagues became a hallmark of her style.  This was followed by two years at Women’s Health Clinic. She also worked with various agencies leading or supporting Board development and strategic planning. She served more than seven years on the Board of Commissioners of the Manitoba Telephone System and worked for five years in the Provincial Health Department.

During the latter years of her career, Laurel had the delight and privilege of working with the women of the College of Midwives of Manitoba to ensure that midwives trained in various jurisdictions were recognized as safe and effective primary health care practitioners.

Laurel will be forever remembered, cherished and dearly loved by her family and by her friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Art City, 616 Broadway in Winnipeg, or Grands 'n’ More Winnipeg, c/o 821 Parkhill Street, Winnipeg, MB, R2Y 0V4, or to a charity of choice.

A service will be held from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2019 at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, located at 603 Wellington Crescent.

A life well and richly lived.
