IRIS FORTLAGE

(née Brown)

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts we announce that Mom passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness on December 10, 2016.

She is predeceased by her parents James and Margaret and survived by her sister Evelyn (Tommy) Smyth and brother David (Joyce) Brown.  Left to mourn are her children Karen (Robert) Pomarenski, Nigel (Kathleen) Fortlage, Julia (Paul) Panchyshyn and her partner of ten years, Robert Robinson.  She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren Samantha and Stephanie Lacoste and Graeme and Gillian Fortlage, as well as her many nieces and nephews both here and in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland.

Mom was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on November 27, 1940 and immigrated to Canada with her young family in 1972 to escape the political troubles in Northern Ireland.  With her brother and his family, along with many other friends, who had already immigrated, the transition to life in Canada was made so much easier.

Mom had many interests:  golfing, gardening, baking, bowling, curling, knitting and she always had a special place in her heart for the many family dogs over the years.  She loved spending time with her family and friends, and was in her glory when she could host a big family dinner.  And of course she would never let us forget May 24, 2010 when she got a hole-in-one on the 9th hole at Harbourview Golf Course!

As per Mom’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family gathering will be held.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society (45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, R3T 0R3) or St. Boniface General Hospital Palliative Care Service (409 Tache Ave, Winnipeg, R2H 2A6).

The family wishes to sincerely thank the staff at the St. Boniface Hospital Ward A6 West, as well as the St. Boniface Palliative Care Team and CancerCare Manitoba for their amazing care and compassion.

Mom always said no matter how busy or difficult life got there was always time for a good cup of tea.

It’s time for you to rest,

so we’ll put the kettle on Mom.

You deserve it.
