ZORAN MAKSIMOVICH

With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of our dad, Zoran Maksimovich, at 71 years of age in Winnipeg on January 6 th , 2018. Zoran is survived by daughter Megan and son Peregrin (Nancy), their mother Jennifer Pilgrim, and grand-daughters Hannah and Lauren, and son Michael and his mother Patricia Barss.

Born in Belgrade, he arrived in Canada in 1951 with his mother Ljubica and initially settled in Kirkland Lake, Ontario where his grandfather had started the Union Bakery. They moved to Lake Francis, Manitoba in 1958, where his mother pursued her teaching career, and then to Winnipeg, which has been home ever since.

He graduated from Vincent Massey Collegiate as valedictorian, and following his passion for mathematics and science, completed his Bsc in math and physics at U of M in 1968. He loved the outdoors, and his early career with RPC natural resource consultants took him to what he considered paradise in the remote northern lakes of the prairie provinces and the Frolander Island Lodge at the north-west angle. Most of the rest of his career was spent with Community Financial Counselling Service as a counsellor and then executive director, expressing his passions and values of compassion and fairness, and service to the community through the boards of Children’s House, Rosemary Darville Fund, the United Way, and Camp Wasaga. In recent years he worked and enjoyed the company of his co-workers at Statistics Canada.

He loved birds, photography, astronomy, chess and the most challenging cryptic crosswords, reading, hot summer evenings of music at the Folk Festival, and an engaging conversation usually accompanied by dry wit.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Fort Whyte Nature Centre or the Nature Conservancy to help preserve habitat for his beloved birds.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, January 26th, at 2 pm at the Unitarian Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Crescent.

Love you Dad (Grandpa Zee)
