Ivan will be missed bigtime by all of our neighbors on Rizzuto Bay, especially the Kehler family, Anton, Yvonne, Melissa, Chelsea, Taylor Mark, Nathlie and Emery, and on the other side, Barb and Daryl.
He had many more friends, too numerous to mention.
Ivan was born in his beloved selo Perković near Šibenik, Croatia on December 18, 1951. After finishing high school at the age of 18 he came to Canada on Aug 17, 1970 to make a better living.
He was in Canada 3 years before going back to Croatia to marry the love of his life, Dušanka Papak. Dušanka joined him in Winnipeg on May 17, 1973. A year later their son, Renato, was born on April 27, 1974.
The family lived in a few different places before moving into their brand new house on Rizzuto Bay in the spring of 1978 and started on a journey of many fond memories. Raising Renato, playing soccer, hockey and whatever he was into at the time, even boxing at one point (for 2 days).
His best days were spent with Renato, teaching him the skills of soccer. Dad was a coach for many years. Later, Renato was learning the skills of carpentry and anything else he could learn from his dad.
Ivan had a few jobs over the years ending up working for Exco where he did maintenance for the Real Canadian Super Stores. He truly enjoyed any challenge that came his way. He loved assembling things but had no use for the confusing instructions that came with a lot of the items he assembled. He just found his own way to put things together.
In the mean time, Renato had grown up, matured and it was time for him to move out of the basement. He started looking for a house with Ivan’s help and purchased his first house on McMeans Avenue East in Transcona. He made lots of memories there and quickly learned what it meant to be a home owner. When he got his first gas bill Renato phoned Ivan and said “Dad, how much is your gas bill? I think I’m overpaying here.” In his own special way Ivan assured him it was quite normal and had a good laugh.
There were lots of girls coming and going but one stayed for good. Her name is Lisa. Ivan (Tata) welcomed her into our family with open arms. Both had such a beautiful relationship. Soon after Renato and Lisa were married they started a family and DiDa’s little Arturo was born.
Ivan’s health was declining at that time so he decided to quit work just like that and become Arturo’s full-time babysitter. Changing diapers – no problem.
The best years of his life were spent bonding with Arturo. It was so special. In his eyes he was the best Dida in the world. Unfortunately, his health continued to decline even before he was diagnosed with cancer less than a year ago.
This last year was extremely challenging in many ways, but through it all Ivan never gave up right until his last breath. The dreaded cancer took him.
away on February 20, 2020 at 8:33 PM.
A celebration of his life will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at the Glen Lawn Funeral Home located at 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg, Manitoba
