J. Keith Richards

February 5, 1930- January 31, 2020

JAMES KEITH RICHARDS

Keith was born and raised in Winnipeg.  He had a happy, active childhood where he acquired the nickname Ric.  His older sister, Allene, was the smart, quiet one and Keith was the center of attention.  He was a joker who always liked to make people smile.  He was a somewhat of an athlete, he played hockey in a church league but his main sport was running track.

He met Peggy in 1949 and they were married on June 27, 1952.  They had 3 children – Karen, Derry and Jeff.  He was very proud of his family.  He was a problem solver and continued to provide support to his family all his life.  It seemed to be his mission in life to make Peggy happy.

As an adult, Keith worked mainly in sales.  He travelled extensively in the early years.  They lived in Toronto for a few years before returning to Winnipeg.  Keith was also involved in the Chamber of Commerce for many years.  He retired from M&J Roofing after a lengthy career.  He was an active member of Toast Masters.  He was even hired out as a humorous speaker for a few years.  He enjoyed having the same name as a celebrity and it certainly helped people to remember his name.

He kept active after retirement and joined several men’s groups that met once a week.  One of the highlights of his week was meeting his friends for breakfast.  His main activities became golf and swimming.  His grandchildren and even his great-grandchildren all have very fond memories of Grampa Ric.   He continued to go out of his way to provide support for all his family – whatever assistance anyone needed, he would do his best to help.

Keith was predeceased by Peggy on Dec 31, 2017 and his sister, Allene, in April of 2019.  Keith moved 4 times in 2018 and life was challenging being alone for the first time.  He struggled to find his purpose.  However, he kept his sense of humour and always had a smart comment to make to anyone he passed in the hall at the personal care home.  He still loved to make people smile.

Keith will be greatly missed by many friends and relatives including his children: Karen Hodgins (Randy), Derry Richards and Jeff Richards (Sheila), grandchildren: Jason Lane, Brianne Lane (Matt), and Brooke Richards, and great-grandchildren: Chevelle, Max and Arya.
