WILLIAM HERKERT

August 25, 1922 – November 7, 2016

It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather William Herkert in the Victoria General Hospital at the age of 94 years.

He will be dearly missed by his daughter Lorraine; sons Jim (Kathy) and John and grandchildren Megan, Taylor, Tony, Mitch, Willie and Robyn. He was predeceased by his son Doug and brothers Fritz and Paul.

William was known and loved by many who knew and was often affectionately known as Bill or Willie. He was born in the RM of McDonald and grew up in Ferndale before moving to Sanford, where he remained for the rest of his life.  He married Dorothy in 1952 and together they raised four children.

Over the years Bill farmed grain and livestock.  He lived off the land and didn’t need much that he could not provide for himself.  Bill’s gardens were his pride and joy and he loved the time he spent gardening, especially during the last few years of his life. He also loved baking bread and gave to others far more than he ever kept for himself.  Dancing was another activity he enjoyed.  He was often seen cutting the rug at the Brunkild Hall and would often need to hide from the ladies in the men’s room when he needed a rest!

Bill was as kind and gentle as he was strong. He never held a grudge and seldom got upset.  He lived to pass his knowledge and skills on to others and always took the time to show and explain in a patient and loving way. He cared deeply for his family and demonstrated his love in his own way.  His family never doubted his love and dedication and will always remember how he tireless drove the kids to their hockey, piano and swimming lessons without ever complaining.

Bill was a man who could fix just about anything even when it seemed impossible.  When a repair was completed it was commonly referred to as “Fixed… The Herkert Way.”

A celebration of William’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m Tuesday, November 15, 2016 in the Brunkild Memorial Recreation Centre, Main Street at 1st Avenue, Brunkild, MB.

In our memories and hearts,

he will always stay.

Rest in Peace, Dad.

We will miss you always.
